Generally members must be of true Indian heritage (not someone whose "grandmother" was a supposed "Cherokee princess"), know their people, know their history, know their culture, know their language, and be willing to undergo intensive education for these if they don't. They must have total sobriety and commit to a total immersion education the equivalent of a master's degree of reading. Non-Indians and those with little Indian heritage can become "support people" and it's recommended that they undergo the same education. The only difference between a support person and a member is that support people can't speak for the chapter or sign anything as a member. Sometimes a support person may eventually be given membership, and sometimes an Indian will be refused. That's a judgement call by the chapter.
